About Mary Chaney
My career in the helping profession began ten years ago as a field guide at a wilderness therapy program. Over the years, it’s been my passion to blend recreation, nature, and therapy, both personally and professionally. Since then, I’ve gained experience in a variety of settings, from hospice care to residential treatment for SUD, and continued my passion for the outdoors while mentoring underserved youth on skis. In choosing recovery from alcohol 6 years ago, I committed to becoming a therapist and landed here at Red Willow as a clinical intern.
Growing up in Utah, I was taught to hunt, forage, and fly fish as a kid, which fostered my appreciation for the natural world. I’m the first in my family to travel internationally— a great privilege, and those experiences deepened my love for diverse cultures and spiritual traditions. Over the past decade, I’ve cultivated a personal practice in yoga and breathwork, which continues to support my own growth and healing. The mind-body connection, and the biological technology of our breath for its physiological benefits, tickles my nerd brain.
My Approach
My therapeutic approach is grounded in both lived experience and professional training. I work from a trauma-informed, collaborative perspective that considers the environmental and systemic factors in our culture and society that contribute to suffering. While I naturally bring an existential lens to the human experience, I’m also pragmatic and focused on helping clients navigate everyday challenges.
Depending on each individual’s needs and preferences, I draw from a variety of therapeutic modalities, including CBT, mindfulness exercises, motivational interviewing, creative techniques for bereavement or unresolved grief, and narrative therapy. I also bring a strong emphasis on the mind–body connection, recognizing its vital role in healing and growth.
